The story is told from three perspectives Harper, Tabitha, and Ainsley (Tabitha's teenage daughter). Each woman will bring their own unique opinion and voice about their past and the events of the summer that will change everything for them.
Tabitha- Is still reeling from a tragedy many years ago and trying to hold her current life in Nantucket together. At her mother's store, she runs the sales continue to decline, she hasn't talked to her sister in fourteen years, she just broke up with her boyfriend Ramsay, and her teenage daughter can't keep herself out of trouble. When Tabitha is presented with a unique opportunity on Martha's Vineyard for the summer will it be just what she needs to find her way again?
Harper- Her life is a little bit of a mess and it seems no matter how hard she tries to pick up the pieces it doesn't make anything any better. Harper got caught up in a drug bust and narrowly avoided jail time, her father Billy died, and while taking care of him she had an affair with his doctor. Harper doesn't know where to start or what to do. When her niece Ainsley calls from Nantucket asking for help she decides to go. Can she prove to everyone she is not a mess and capable of making smart choices?
Ainsley- Tabitha's teenage daughter who has found herself with the wrong crowd and making poor decisions. Lost in her family's chaos and finding herself alone at her house she calls her aunt Harper to stay with her on Nantucket. With the help of Harper and new role model Caylee will she be able to get herself back on track?
All three characters are on a path of self-discovery this summer but each doesn't know how much they need it. You will watch the family mend, heal, fall in love, and find new beginnings. While each of them works through their baggage the reader gets to see what the summer will bring. Only in the light airy way Elin Hilderbrand can do with her writing.
